Who's Driving This Car?

A current joke making the rounds tells of two women of an age who are traveling in a car. The driver makes mistake upon mistake, missing stop signs and sailing right through red lights. It’s a wonder they haven’t wrecked by the time her terrified passenger points this out to her. “Oh no!” the driver exclaims. “Am I driving?”

The silly story begs the question: Who’s driving the car of my life?

I love The Message Bible because the modern language zeroes right in on…well, the message…in language everybody can understand. Luke 9:23 leaves no doubt. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat—I am.”

He doesn’t drive through stop signs and ignore red lights. He doesn’t run over curbs or crash into buildings. Those accidents happen when we reach over and take the wheel. He knows how to avoid collisions with buildings or other vehicles.

And the best part is this: He knows the road and what’s up ahead.
