Wise Words

The scene was a corner booth at a family restaurant. Charlotte and Nathaniel were entertaining each other between bites of their dinner. Their parents and I were enjoying our meals and having the kind of disjointed attempt at conversation that accompanies the activity of two lively children.

Suddenly, as Nathaniel raised an objection to something his sister did, we were stopped in mid-sentence when the following came out of Charlotte’s mouth in a very firm tone:

“Look, Nathaniel, life isn’t easy!”
